Do you remember the old Christmas movie about Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer? Now imagine that there are real reindeer like that, but instead of having a nose, they have glowing antlers. And the funniest part is that these antlers save their lives.
If you come to Finland, you’ll be able to see it for yourself. A team of scientists went to Finland to observe this unusual phenomenon. It’s a major problem in an area where eleven accidents involving reindeer occur every day. The result is that one of the people involved in an accident is seriously injured or worse
That’s why Anne Ollila, the director of the Finnish Reindeer Breeders’ Association, decided to use reflective paint to her advantage. With other workers, Anne painted the antlers, part of the fur, and the skin with fluorescent paint that glows in the dark when car headlights hit it
The reflectors mimicked the lights of other cars, leading drivers to believe that the reindeer was just a car going in the same direction as them, and often they didn’t want to slow down.
