An IQ test, or Intelligence Quotient test, is a tool designed to measure human intelligence. The term ‚IQ‘ was introduced by Alfred Binet, a French psychologist, at the beginning of the 20th century. These tests provide a numerical representation of someone’s cognitive abilities compared to others within their age group.

Assessing cognitive abilities through IQ tests involves evaluating various aspects of intelligence, such as verbal skills, spatial awareness, logical reasoning, memory, and problem-solving abilities. Results are often age-normalized and compared against an average score considered as 100, with a standard deviation of 15 points.

The purpose of IQ tests is not only to measure a person’s overall intelligence but also to help understand individual strengths and weaknesses in cognitive skills. While they can provide valuable insights, IQ tests are not without criticism, as they may not fully capture all aspects of intelligence, such as creativity, emotional intelligence, and practical skills.

IQ tests assess skills such as reasoning, problem-solving, memory, and mathematical abilities. They focus on measuring innate intelligence rather than knowledge derived from education or experience. Common IQ tests include the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales. These tests typically yield a single score, the IQ score, standardized with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.

Interpretation of IQ scores

A score of 100 is considered average on an IQ test. Scores above or below 100 indicate above-average or below-average intelligence, respectively. While IQ tests are widely recognized, they also face criticism. Some argue that they do not encompass the full spectrum of human intelligence or that cultural biases may influence results.

Limitations of IQ scores
